Committee
President
Emma Montgomery
Hi, I’m Emma and I am absolutely thrilled to be Breakaway’s president this year! I am a 4th year philosophy student from Glasgow and have spent most of my life before uni rock-climbing and hiking so Breakaway was the perfect society to join. Although I love to munro bag (despite forgetting what number I am on), my favourite part of the society is the people; we are really fun, you should join. If I’m not hiking, I’ll likely be in the library or at the pub playing music and drinking a Guinness. Looking forward to meeting you all; tiaraidh an dràsda!

Vice President
Callum Bond
Hello!
I am Callum, a third year geography student and this year’s breakaway Vice President. I am from Berkshire in England and love spending time outdoors and have been hiking across parts of Britian for as long as I can remember. I’ve always loved hiking and getting outdoors and this society has allowed me to continue that passion. Since joining I have had a brilliant time exploring Scotland, going to socials, and making great friends.
I have enjoyed every minute of being part of breakaway, and for that reason I would encourage everyone who is even slightly interested to join as well.
If I am not hiking somewhere you can always find me in the pub on Bell Street should you wish to chat about Breakaway, Ale or anything else really.
Secretary
Matthew Murray
Hi! I'm Matthew, a second-year maths student, and I'm excited to be your secretary for this coming year! The past year as a freshers rep has led to some of my fondest memories of St-Andrews, from breath-taking views, building snowmen up Munros, and ceilidhing in hostels. When I'm not hiking or immersed in some maths, I'll be reading a good book or taking a walk down West Sands beach. Looking forward to another great year with Breakaway!
Treasurer
Victoria Schroeder-Finckh
Hey everyone! I’m Victoria, a final-year Biology and Chemistry student from Germany. I love exploring the Scottish Highlands and taking in the breathtaking views, whether from the top of a Munro or by a beautiful loch! During my time at St Andrews, I’ve been lucky to meet many amazing friends through Breakaway, and I’m excited to meet even more of you this year! Outside of Breakaway, I enjoy playing golf and taking walks along the beautiful St Andrews beaches!
Trip Secretary
Louise Simons
Hi, I’m Louise, a third year Theoretical Physics student from Aberdeen. I joined Breakaway when I was a first year and I’m always so grateful I did. This year I’ll be your Trip Secretary, and I am so excited to help as much as I can and see everyone on all the upcoming trips we have organized. I have always loved the outdoors and being able to experience it as much as possible, so Breakaway was a perfect choice from the beginning. Outside of Breakaway you’ll likely spot me in the gym or in a charity shop. I look forward to meeting everyone at our weekly pub social as well as the trips!
Social Rep
Jenny O'Gorman
Hi! I’m Jenny, a third-year Art History student from Edinburgh, and I’m delighted to be one of your social reps this year! Joining Breakaway in my first year gave me a strong sense of belonging and the chance to build lasting friendships. I’m looking forward to meeting both new and returning members, whether on the hills or at one of the many exciting social events we have planned. Our trips take us to some of the most beautiful spots in Scotland – like Skye, where we were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights. When I am not scaling Munro’s I’m likely to be found braving a wild swim at Castle Sands.
Social Rep
Andrew Mihal
Hello everyone! I’m Andrew Mihal, a second year studying Economics and Philosophy and I’ll be one of your social reps this year. I love a conversation with a great view and Hillwalking just happens to have both. Both on and off of trips, you’ll be seeing me run (and enjoy) the social life from bonfires to bagpipes. Outside of Breakaway, I’m also senior student of McIntosh Hall and play on the St Andrews Typhoons ice hockey team. I’ve already met so many wonderful people and I’m looking forward to meeting so many more! See you on the trails!
Kit Officer
Ben Ko
Hello!
I am Ben, a third-year philosophy student. I am the Kit Officer for Breakaway, which essentially means I take care of the maps, first-aid kits, and any winter gear that we may need. So far, my favourite trips have been the two residentials to Glen Coe, and Gairloch. When I’m not stuck in a Breakaway meeting, you can find me: either drinking at the pub (in Aikmans), playing (or watching / talking about) rugby, or engaging in a debate. I look forward to welcoming many new members for this fantastic hillwalking club.
Publicity Rep
Emilia Brooks
Hi my name is Emilia and I’m a fourth year studying geography. I’m so excited to be publicity rep again this year. Breakaway has been one of best things to come out of my uni experience and I’m really looking forward to all the trips this year! When I’m not hiking on a breakaway trip I can be found swimming in the sea, drinking hot chocolate, or watching a movie.
Webmaster
Paul Koumbourlis
Hi, I’m Paul and I’m a fourth year Management and Sustainable Development student from Maryland, USA and I’m excited to be the Webmaster for Breakaway this year. I started Breakaway in my second year and the various trips such as Glen Nevis have made me fall in love with hillwalking. When I’m not doing Breakaway-related things or studying, you can find me either playing video games or aimlessly biking around St Andrews. I look forward to maintaining Breakaway’s website and meeting all returning and new members!
Ordinary Member
Julia Morledge
Hello!! I’m Julia, a 4th year chemistry student and the Ordinary Member of Committee, to take care of any extra tasks for Breakaway. I’m excited to be part of such a lovely group this year and to meet everyone on our trips; I’m particularly looking forward to heading up to Gairloch this October as it was my favourite trip from last year. I’ve loved enjoying Scotland’s beauty by foot over my life and am looking forward to more with you all! When I’m not hiking or studying, you can find me cooking, gardening, or collaging.
Master of Merch
Ella Malaika
Hi! I’m Ella Malaika and I’m so excited to be the master of merch this year! I’m a second year geography student from East Lothian and being a part of Breakaway this past year has been one of the best parts of being at St Andrews. The community created is so welcoming and it's been so wonderful to get to explore even more of Scotland. I absolutely love how accessible Breakaway is, if this is your first time hiking or if you are keen to bag all the Munros then we have something for you! I am so excited to design and kit you out with new merch and to hike and chat with you this year!
Health and Safety Officer
Charlotte Weir
Hi! I’m Charlotte, I’m a second year IR and Arabic student, and I am your Health and Safety Officer this year! I’m originally from Washington DC. I love anything arts, and if I’m not at Breakaway you’ll find me at an IR talk or a play. I joined breakaway because I was so excited to spend time outside and explore different parts of Scotland. I love it because the people are so nice and people can join at any level. I am excited to be your HSO and make sure that everyone feels safe and comfortable on our trips. Also to bring baked goods to trips! See you on the trail!
Food Convenor
Wilson Sugeng
Hi, I’m Wilson, a third-year Philosophy and Economics student from hot and humid Indonesia! I’ll continue to be your Food Convenor this year, where I’ll be planning and organising the vegan and gluten/nut-free dinners for our weekend trips. Growing up in a country with over 1,300 unique cultures, I developed a love for cooking fusion dishes that blend Southeast Asian flavours with international cuisines. Outside the kitchen, I’m passionate about Theology and fondly recall walking the Camino de Santiago, where I savoured the local Spanish dishes along the way. I can’t wait to share more meals and memories with all of you soon!

Fudge McDuff
Hi, I'm a highland cow and I love Breakaway! I really like the Scottish Highlands and seeing them from the snuggly comfort of a friendly hillwalker's backpack. Sometimes it's difficult to see though, with all my hair getting in the way. When I'm not seeing the Highlands, I live with the social reps who take good care of me - they're the best!
Moooooo.
