Peter Meiklejohn

Hi, I’m Peter and I’m a master’s student from Edinburgh studying Theoretical Physics. I’m thrilled to be your Breakaway President this year and look forward to meeting everyone on all the fantastic trips we have planned. My parents dragged me up my first Munro when I was six years old and ever since then I’ve loved exploring the Scottish Highlands, on foot, bike or kayak. With this being my fifth year in the club, I’m sure I can answer almost any questions you may have. When I’m not on a hill you will probably find me playing my bagpipes around St Andrews!

Emma Montgomery

Hi! My name is Emma, and I am thrilled to be the Vice President of Breakaway this year. I am a third-year philosophy student from Glasgow and have been hiking and rock-climbing in Scotland most of my life, so naturally I immediately sought a hiking group in uni to continue my adventures. Although I love our wee hills here in Scotland, what I love more is the friends that I’ve made (and our trips to the pub!). Looking forward to meeting you all; tiaraidh an dràsda!

Kat Sier

Hi, I’m Kat and I’m a fourth year from the Lake District studying History. I’m super excited to be the secretary for Breakaway this year and I can’t wait to get back into the Highlands! I joined Breakaway in second year and since then I’ve climbed lots of Munros, explored some beautiful parts of Scotland and made some incredible friends. It’s definitely been one of the highlights of my uni experience! When I’m not hiking, you’ll find me thrift shopping or looking for sea glass on the beach. I can’t wait for some great trips this year!

Victoria Schroeder-Finckh

Hey, I'm Victoria! I’m a third-year student in Biology and Chemistry from Germany. I love exploring the Scottish Highlands and enjoying the stunning views, whether those are from a Munro or beside a beautiful Loch! It’s my third year in Breakaway and I am thrilled to say that I have met so many lovely people through the club and am excited to meet you this year. When I'm in St Andrews, I love to play Golf and stroll along the beaches!

Amelie Logue

Hi! My name is Amelie and this year I will be your Membership and Trip Secretary. Previously I have been Freshers Rep and Socials, and I am excited to continue being on committee and helping members navigate their options and trip signups. I love to hike, ski, swim, and generally be outside. I’m pumped to play a bigger part in trip organization for members this year and can’t wait to have a lot of fun hiking!

Emily Copeland

Hi, I’m Emily and I’m super excited to be one of the two social reps this year! I’m a fourth year from Delaware and I study art history and modern history. Although I come from a place with not many opportunities for hiking, I love the outdoors and I love how Breakaway allows people with varying experience levels to get out and explore Scotland. I joined Breakaway at the end of my second year and it has been the best decision! I’ve met so many amazing people and been to some beautiful places. When I’m not on a breakaway trip, you can find me grabbing coffee in town and looking for sea glass on Castle Sands! I look forward to seeing you at one of our bonfires or pub socials!

Megan Teal

Hi! I’m Megan, a fourth year English Lit student and I’ll be one of your social reps this year. I’ve been a member of breakaway for the past year and the trips I went on definitely made my third year special. There’s a time to study and then there’s a time to escape to the highlands for the weekend! Outside of breakaway, I’m also a member of the acapella society and swing dance society. I can’t wait to meet everyone at our weekly pub socials.

Hi, I'm Louise! I'm a second year studying Physics. I've always tried to go hiking as much as I can and so Breakaway was an obvious choice of club. There is so many fun people to meet on the walks and of course the occasional pub is always a bonus! If I'm not out in the hills you will likely spot me in the Uni gym. I look forward to all the trips organised this year and being in charge of this beautiful website :)

Ben Ko

Hello all!

I am Ben, the Ordinary Member of the Breakaway 2023/24 committee! This means that I do not have a specific role, but am on the committee, to help with any general tasks. My hiking ‘CV’ is not that impressive, as I only started hiking since year 10, when I did DofE. Ever since that enjoyable experience, hiking has always been one of my favourite hobbies. Scotland is great for hiking, and its highlands are absolutely stunning, which is why I can’t wait for the next academic year to start! Looking forward to meeting any new members, and feel free to reach out, if there are any problems at all! I will always be happy to help!

Ava Echard

Hi everyone! My name is Ava and I’m a third year from Tennessee studying International Relations. I am very excited to be Breakaway’s Merch Officer for this year. I’ve been involved in Breakaway throughout the past year and have found it to be a way to meet some lovely people and explore some beautiful places. I’ve been involved in hiking my whole life and have found Scotland to be the best place to continue my love for the outdoors. When not on a Breakaway trip, you’ll find me drawing at the beach or reading in a coffee shop.

Health and Safety Officer

Ilinca Dascalescu

Hi, I’m Ilinca and I am a fourth year studying chemistry from Romania. I’ll be your Health and Safety Officer this year and I’m really excited to meet you all! I only joined Breakaway last year, and in this short amount of time I had the chance to explore and fall in love with the Highlands. Most of my previous hiking experience is from back home and around the Balkans. Outside hiking I play basketball, I enjoy salsa dancing (don’t be surprised if you see me do some random dance moves when I have some music on), and I also like cooking!

Wilson Sugeng

Hi, I’m Wilson and I’m a second-year Philosophy and Economics student from hot and humid Indonesia! I’ll be your Food Convener this year, which means that I’ll plan and organise the dinners for our weekend trips. Aside from hiking in the tropics, I grew up cooking a lot of fusion dishes from our country’s over 1300 cultures and other international cuisines. (Which is really an excuse to not eat my mom’s cooking.) I also have a strong interest in Theology—a core memory of mine being walking and sampling lovely Spanish dishes along the Camino de Santiago. Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Andrew Mihal

Hey all! I’m Andrew Mihal, a first year studying Economics and Philosophy from Los Angeles, California. Most importantly, I’m your Freshers’ Rep for this year. I have plenty of hiking experience mostly in the high mountains of Los Angeles but also across the US’s vast national parks and now across the beautiful Scottish Highlands. I love to travel and hike but when I can’t do that, I’m playing ice hockey and skiing. I’m always available for a chat and a nice hike and I have plenty of energy to give. If you ever need a bit of energy out on the hike, just look for the tall redhead and say hello. See you on the trails!

Matthew Murray

Hi! I'm Matthew, a first year studying maths. I'm from a small village an hour north of Stirling, and I'm delighted to be one of your First Year Reps! Since I can remember, I've spent my weekends exploring every nook and cranny of the lochs and mountains around my house, so I can't wait to explore new places with Breakaway! When I'm not hiking or immersed in some maths, I'll be reading a good book or on the hockey pitch. Excited for a great year of hiking with Breakaway!

Fudge McDuff

Hi, I'm a highland cow and I love Breakaway! I really like the Scottish Highlands and seeing them from the snuggly comfort of a friendly hillwalker's backpack. Sometimes it's difficult to see though, with all my hair getting in the way. When I'm not seeing the Highlands, I live with the social reps who take good care of me - they're the best!
